Venice and its sestieri: a guide to the city’s districts

Venice and its sestieri: a guide to the city’s districts

April 2025

Unlike many cities divided into neighborhoods and districts, Venice is divided into six sestieri, a uniquely Venetian term that reflects the city’s historical administrative divisions. Each sestiere has its own character and charm, with distinctive features that make each one a worthwhile destination.

You will become familiar with the concept of sestiere by exploring the city, but also by indulging in a cocktail at our Savor Bar and its beautiful summer garden. Our curated cocktail list pays homage to each sestiere with a dedicated drink, offering our guests a tasteful journey that captures the essence of each area.

Here’s a handy guide to help you navigate the sestieri of the Serenissima — and the perfect cocktail to enjoy after your visit.

Castello: Between the Arsenale and the Gardens

Castello is the largest of the sestieri and it stretches eastward to the city’s edge. This district is close to our heart as it’s home to Hotel Indigo Venice. It is also the seat of the Arsenale, the heart of Venice’s naval power, and the Biennale, with its pavilions nestled in the Gardens. Moving towards the far end of the sestiere, tourism gradually gives way to a quieter, more authentic Venice, with laundry hanging outside and peaceful little squares (campielli).

Our cocktail: Samphire-infused white rum, lime juice, cane sugar syrup, Bitter delle Sirene, Prosecco, Angostura, salicornia salt rim.

San Marco: The heart of Venice’s grandeur

San Marco is the most famous and visited sestiere, serving as the city’s vibrant heart. Here, you’ll find the stunning Piazza San Marco, its namesake Basilica, and the Doge’s Palace. It’s the district of Venetian icons, lined with historic cafés, such as Caffè Florian, and luxury boutiques. While it’s a pretty crowded area, wandering off the main paths will reveal a more authentic Venetian atmosphere. Just a few steps away from the busiest alleys, the vibe changes completely.

Our cocktail: Bacon-washed Nardini 7y grappa, honey syrup, coriander bitters, black pepper mist.

Cannaregio: Tradition and authenticity

Located on the northern side of the city, Cannaregio is the most populated sestiere. Far from mass tourism, it preserves a genuine and peaceful atmosphere. This is where you’ll find the Jewish Ghetto – the first in European history – with active synagogues and museums that tell the story of the community. Cannaregio is perfect for relaxed strolls along the canals and enjoying delicious cicchetti in traditional bacari.

Our cocktail: Cipango Shochu, Amaro Nostrano, Select, citrus foam.

Dorsoduro: Art and bohemian life

Nestled in the southwestern part of the city, Dorsoduro is a paradise for art lovers. It’s home to the Gallerie dell’Accademia, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and the panoramic Punta della Dogana. It’s also a vibrant university area with a youthful vibe and many bars and cafés along the Giudecca Canal. We highly recommend taking a sunset stroll along the Zattere promenade.

Our cocktail: locally crafted Gin dei Sospiri, homemade Prosecco vermouth, peppermint oil.

Santa Croce: Arrivals and departures

Santa Croce may not boast the fame of some other sestieri, as it’s a transit area for tourists arriving at Piazzale Roma. Yet it’s a lively district where the mainland meets the lagoon. Here, you’ll find hidden gems, such as Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio – mostly frequented by locals – and fascinating museums like Ca’ Pesaro.

Our cocktail: Tequila, coffee, Aperol, agave syrup, salt air.

San Polo: Markets and merchants

San Polo is the smallest of the sestieri, nevertheless it boasts an unmatched beating heart: the Rialto Market. Here, among stalls selling fresh fish, fruits, and vegetables, you can still feel the atmosphere that once defined Venice’s commercial might. Crossing the iconic Rialto Bridge, you will find vibrant, lively alleys. Don’t miss artistically remarkable sites like the Basilica dei Frari, a true treasure trove of art.

Our cocktail: MacGuffin tarragon vodka, oriental spice syrup, lemon juice, Japanese black sesame rim.

Exploring Venice sestiere by sestiere is the best way to truly grasp its complexity and timeless charm. Each district is a microcosm, with its own rhythms, scents, and scenery: let curiosity lead you, and don’t be afraid to get lost-in Venice, every detour is a discovery.
